Already on sale in Europe in the Outback and Legacy (This Week, Feb. 25), Subaru's boxer turbodiesel engine finds a new home under the hood of the automaker's Forester SUV, this time paired with a six-speed manual transmission and closed diesel-particulate filter (DPF).
Hirofumi Senoo, general manager for Subaru's European Test and Development Center, says the company made the decision four years ago to develop the diesel version, based on the 2.5-liter gasoline boxer-four found in a host of Subaru vehicles. The 2.0-liter engine uses the same bore centers as the gas version but shares little else. The bores have been reduced by 13.5 millimeters and the stroke lengthened by 7.0 millimeters, to a square 86 millimeters each. Subaru says the addition of the DPF helps keep carbon-dioxide emissions to just 104 grams per mile.
In the Forester, the engine turns out 145 hp at 3,600 rpm (just 3 hp less than in the Legacy and Outback), with a peak 258 lb-ft of torque available between 1,800 and 2,400 rpm. On the road, the Forester never ...
