A. J. ALLMENDINGER WOULD almost certainly still have a NASCAR ride if Scott Speed had not taken to stock cars so quickly. That's the Cliffs Notes version of why Speed is in and Allmendinger is out at Team Red Bull, effective the first weekend in October.

After less than a year of circle-track racing, former Formula One driver Speed will make his Sprint Cup debut well before most expected. In fact, he would have willingly spent the rest of this season and next honing his skills before moving up.

"I could have waited another year, and it wouldn't have bothered me, he said after recent ARCA Re/Max and Craftsman Truck Series races at Talladega Superspeedway. "I wanted to wait for the right time for Cup, whenever that was. I figured the longer I waited, the better I'd be when I got there.

His pre-Cup resume is impressive: three poles, four wins, 10 top-fives and 17 top-10s in 20 ARCA races, plus a pole, a win, three top-fives and five top-10s in 11 Truck Series starts. He takes an 85-point lead over Ricky Stenhouse Jr. into ARCA's season finale at Toledo the day after his Saturday-night Cup debut at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Oct. 11.

Speed's chance comes now because he learned stock cars faster than anyone at Red Bull anticipated. He had no such experience before joining ARCA, where he got his first win in only his fourth start and his first pole in his eighth. He did well on dirt and asphalt surfaces and on long and short ovals.
