MARK FIELDS IS A WUSS. That's my conclusion after a day of briefing at Ford on new drivetrains, etc., then driving lots of Ford products.
We were 45 minutes into the droning before "diesel was mentioned, and then only in relation to trucks. No diesel engines in cars. It was clear Ford had bought into the focus-group/consultants' conclusions that "Americans won't buy diesel.
Typically, consultants silently view a gathering of consumers voicing opinions. These groups often are dominated by a stentorian guy with a gimme cap and a belly draped over a saucer-sized buckle. "Diesel is noisy, smoky and smelly. Since only opinions count, nobody corrects the misinformation (once true but now history), and the negative report is PowerPointed to Ford execs. "Americans won't buy diesel.
At our briefing, a suit at the podium allows that Ford will, of course, have diesel cars in Europe "ready to bring here should the market in the U.S. change.
Which means if Americans embrace Honda's diesel, or Subaru's boxer diesel or whatever from wherever, Ford can say, "Me too. Not proactive, ...
