On Oct. 2, the U.S government indicted IndyCar Series driver and two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves on six counts of income-tax evasion. He allegedly used offshore companies to hide more than $5 million in wages.
The 33-year-old Brazilian pleaded not guilty to all charges on Oct. 3 in federal court in Miami, including one count of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government. He faces up to 35 years in prison if convicted and sentenced to maximum terms on all charges.
Castroneves made his plea while wearing leg shackles and handcuffs. He was released on $10 million bail.
"I am not guilty, he said after a tearful courtroom appearance. "I'm a race-car driver. This is a very difficult situation. I'll be strong, and I'll win this race.
His sister and former business manager, Kati Castroneves, was similarly charged, along with an attorney, Alan Miller, who also represents NASCAR drivers Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer.
The income Castroneves allegedly hid was from 1999 to 2004. The companies he is accused of using were in Panama, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Kati Castroneves and Miller did not enter pleas, but they were released on bail of $2 million and $250,000, respectively.
