First post-cold war space policy announced.

The White House yesterday announced the first post-Cold War national space policy, providing guidance to federal agencies on how to best utilize space assets to meet national objectives in a new era.

The classified policy supersedes all previous policies, the most recent one issued in 1989 by former President George Bush.

"In general, the first post-Cold War statement of National Space Policy provides a coherent vision and direction for the conduct of space activities in response to the major changes which have occurred since 1989," the Pentagon said in a statement.

The policy has numerous ramifications for the Defense Department and its slew of space…
