Teetering on the edge of another "flip-flop," this time on the Iraq War, Barack Obama reaffirmed his support for a 16-month timetable for withdrawal. Never mind that U.S. commanders on the ground doubt that such a rapid drawdown would even be logistically possible. Never mind that his rationale for a drawdown is badly dated, premised on the discredited notion that the situation in Iraq will magically improve just as soon as Iraqis are left to their own devices (actually, the surge has led to enhanced security and political progress). Never mind that sending two additional combat brigades to Afghanistan, as he wishes, would not require pulling all 15 combat brigades out of Iraq (the five additional combat brigades that constituted the surge forces in Iraq will all have left by the end of July).
