Independents face a busy month in Europe, with indie group Impala meeting in Berlin next week to discuss its next move in the ongoing Sony developments, as well as co-hosting a high-profile summit within the French presidency of the European Union.
Sony's recent acquisition of Bertelsmann's 50% stake in Sony BMG - which cleared its final antitrust hurdles last week - is causing grief with the indie group, which opposed the merger between Sony and Bertelsmann's music division four years ago.
The deal for Sony to buy Bertelsmann's share was greenlighted by the EC in mid-September and given final approval on October 1 but Impala executive chair Helen Smith says there is still unfinished business and the group will use its next board meeting to discuss how it can continue to challenge the creation of the joint venture group.
Smith sees the process as simply a "change of ownership" that does not address Impala's competition concerns.
