Global Radio CEO Ashley Tabor is urging Channel 4 to mothball the second digital radio multiplex, as the industry aims to prop up an ailing digital radio market.
The broadcaster's 4 Digital Group won the rights to the second multiplex in summer 2007 and originally planned to launch 10 new stations, including music stations E4 Radio, Pure 4, Closer and Virgin Radio Viva.
These plans have since been scaled back and, at a meeting convened last Friday by Tabor and described by one insider as "D-Day for digital radio", the Global CEO was set to urge Channel 4 to put its plans for the new multiplex on ice and combine the remaining services on the first multiplex.
