Unlimited-download Comes With Music service ushers in new era
By Ben Cardew
Nokia is boldly predicting that its Comes With Music offering will be the "tipping point" for mobile music as it prepares for a global roll- out in 2009.
Nokia entertainment and communities executive vice president Tero Ojanpera and vice president live category Jo Harlow were in London last week for a "Nokia Remix" launch event featuring Keane and Ida Maria, ahead of the first Comes With Music devices, which offer unlimited music downloads for a fixed period, going on sale in the UK on October 16.
To mark the occasion, the company revealed that EMI - the last major label holdout - had signed up to the service, alongside leading indies such as Beggars Group, Ministry of Sound, PIAS and Pinnacle.
Nokia has also secured music publishing rights from CELAS on behalf of EMI Music Publishing, GEMA on behalf of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, SACEM on behalf of Universal Music Publishing and the MCPS-PRS Alliance.
Harlow tells Music Week that she believes the service will be of vital importance to a music industry that is struggling with falling physical sales, as well as the economic downturn.
