Is that a great word or what!?! A guy used it the other day to describe our sometimes goofy coffee machine. "It gets all whopperjawed & makes a mess", he said. A perfect description of almost every piece of software that I have come in contact with. Not to be confused with "cattywhompus." As in, "I turned this thing on, put in all the stuff I was supposed to put in; and the next day it was all cattywhompus." To what do we attribute these phenomena?

I bet that everyone you ask that question will have a different answer. No reason to doubt that all those answers would also be correct. My guess is, though, that there would be some common threads running through those ...
