Byline: STORY AND PHOTOS BY ROGER HART
A new Lamborghini in the fleet? One that has not been driven (read "trashed) by U.S. journalists yet? A rare occurrence. So, when we were offered a Gallardo LP560-4 ("High-Speed High Life, AW, June 23), we naturally said yes. Then we had to figure out what to do with it.
Taking it to a track or some other racing activitytoo predictable. That's what the monthly auto rags are for, being predictable. And Lamborghini kind of frowns on that sort of tire-smoking, sheetmetal-bending thing.
Rather than the obvious, we thought: Tailgate! And cooking! Let's take the Gallardo to a football tailgate party!
And not just your run-of-the-mill high-school game. No, sir. This is a fine Italian creation (well, since Audi got involved a few years ago, there's a strong hint of German influence now), and only a top-line Big 10 game of the week would do: Michigan State versus Notre Dame.
Perfect. The quintessential autumn activity, drawing hundreds of thousandshell, millionsof Americans every fall weekend, would be perfect for an SUV, a minivan or a motor home. Not a two-seater with the cargo space of a middle-schooler's backpack.
At least, that's what we first thought. But the Gallardo actually turned out to be the perfect tailgate partner.
