Oct. 3--Fred P. Pettijohn decided to become a journalist in the eighth grade after a stint as a reporter for a mimeographed classroom publication called Ye Weekly Snooze. The decision served him, and South Florida, well. In a newspaper career that began in 1935 and spanned six decades, Mr. Pettijohn led the Fort Lauderdale News and Sun Sentinel as vice president and editorial director while earning a reputation as an exacting editor, a good-humored boss and a dedicated community leader.
