SMT Health Services Inc. of Wexford operates 14 mobile magnetic resonance imaging units that are transported in vans to various health care facilities where the imaging occurs. MRI is a non-invasive medical diagnostic technology that uses magnetic fields and radioactive waves to produce cross-sectional images of the body.
SMT's mobile diagnostic imaging units allow hospitals to increase their range of services with no capital expenditure. MRI units can cost up to $2 million. This is often an attractive alternative to hospitals as they look for ways to contain costs.
