Last week, FutureTense formally began shipments of Texture 1.0, the first page design program for Web publications to go beyond the limitations of HTML. Aimed at artists and designers, it requires no programming or scripting, yet can achieve some fairly sophisticated presentations. Among other features, Texture allows use of Type 1 and TrueType fonts in Web pages.

Although based on Java technology, Texture does not create applets. Rather, it creates entire pages that combine HTML and Java functions. It has two components: Texture Designer, priced at $500, and Texture Viewer, which is freely distributable.

Texture 1.0 is available only for Windows 95 and NT. But …
