KENNETT SQUARE - After the construction boom of the '80s ended, brothers Steve, Paul and Peter Scharr looked at ways to expand the 28-year-old metal manufacturing business founded by their parents.

Metal Sales and Services Co. started as a metals broker in the basement of the Scharr house. Today the business is one of the few manufacturers nationwide equipped to design, fabricate and install metal column covers, facades and wall panels. Philadelphia's Gallery II shopping mall and the Atlantic City International Airport are some of the company's earliest showcase projects. And they wanted more.
