Funny Car driver Cruz Pedregon left the U.S. Nationals with the year's biggest cash payout, the $100,000 top prize for winning the U.S. Smoke-less Showdown on Aug. 31. The Shootout invites the eight drivers with the best average qualifying positions from the previous year to battle for the big bucks.
Pedregon drove his Toyota Solara past points leader Tim Wilkerson's Chevrolet Impala near the end of O'Reilly Raceway Park's 1,000-foot course to win. It was the 1992 champion's first Shootout win in 10 tries. He came home in second place on four previous occasions.
