SHOOTOUT CHANGES
NASCAR's 2009 Budweiser Shootout, scheduled for Feb. 7 at Daytona International Speedway, will have a new format. The nonpoints race will have 24 cars, six each (based on final owner points) from Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Toyota. The race has been lengthened from 70 to 75 laps and will be divided into 25- and 50-lap segments. Starting positions will be determined by a blind draw. The previous 30 Bud Shootouts were limited to teams that had won pole positions the previous year. The change comes after Coors took over the pole-winner award this season.
ON PROBATION
NASCAR placed Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards on probation for six races because the drivers bumped and banged after the checkered flag flew at Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 23. The probation took effect beginning with the Aug. 31 event at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.
ZYTEK HYBRID
Corsa Motorsports plans to race a hybrid-powered LMP1-class Zytek prototype in the final two races of the American Le Mans Series season, Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on Oct. 4 and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Oct. 18. Corsa intends to run the full 2009 ALMS season.
The car, dubbed Q10, will be powered by a combination of an ethanol-fueled, 4.5-liter V8 and a three-phase-induction electric motor. However, the car has yet to run in hybrid form, and Zytek could not guarantee that it will be ready in time for Petit.
