MICHAEL ANDRETTI insists that his American Le Mans Series team did not send a psychological statement to Acura, but the Detroit Sports Car Challenge that played out on the tight and challenging Belle Isle street circuit sure smelled of it.
Acura officials began the weekend by laying out plans to move up to the LMP1 prototype class next year with teams not known as Andretti Green Racing (see Competition, Page 51). In fact, AGR was nowhere to be seen at Acura's news conference. Andretti's team responded by beating Acura's future LMP1 teams and winning the overall race.
Andretti maintained that AGR could still be an Acura competitor next season in LMP2.
"I think we're still very much in the game with Acura. I think both sides want to keep us out there, he said. But that resolution is for another day. The Detroit win was too sweet to worry about other matters.
"For all the hard work and the heartache we've had this season, I'm just so happy for the team, Andretti said. "We've been knocking at the door recently, and we finally got it done.
The win was the first overall in ALMS for AGR, which entered sports-car racing at the start of last season as Acura's first-to-sign program. AGR was class champion of its first ALMS race, the 12 Hours of Sebring, but overheating issues limited the car to second overall.
