IN THE MID-1960S, WHEN I WAS a teenager, it used to gall me that the best cars were only available to the old guys with the money. How could they appreciate those Corvettes and Porsches and Ferraris the way we so-cool young guys could? In an ideal world, we'd be the ones in the cool fast cars, and they'd be stuck with sedans.
But it was just the way of the world, and I remembered that teenage annoyance the first day I had the latest Corvette roadster out on the road. Savoring the splendid paddle shifter, the 6.2-liter engine's thrust and the amazingly good steering and suspension, I lost myself in the drive, as I do with truly superb cars, and soon enough found myself back in town.
Stopped at a light, I noticed a young guy standing across the road. He was staring at the arrest-me-red Vette. Then, for a moment, our eyes met, and his expression changed from that oh-wow look to something less pleasant. I knew instantly what he was thinking: How come that old guy gets to drive the Corvette and I don't?
