Rivals will compete head-to-head for area patients

Memorial Healthcare System will purchase Southmore Medical Center in Pasadena and go head-to-head with Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp.'s Bayshore Medical Center there.

The acquisition, rumored to cost Memorial about $40 million, ends months of negotiations that saw both Memorial and Columbia - the two largest hospital chains in Houston - jockeying for Southmore.

Memorial is purchasing the 208-bed facility from Touchstone Healthcare Management Inc. of Brentwood, Tenn.

The deal includes the hospital, located at 906 E. Southmore in Pasadena, plus two professional office buildings on the hospital's campus …
