Now in its sixth year, "The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering might just be the classic-car-show equivalent of Major League Baseball's spring training.
Two days before the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the 3,000 people who were able to get tickets to this event at the Quail Lodge in Carmel, Calif. ($250 face value but more than $1,000 from resellers), were greeted with sunny skies, fine food and a golf fairway filled with an eclectic mix of vintage and exotic cars. The limited number of tickets sold guaranteed plenty of elbow room for spectators to mingle among the 150 cars on display, as well as the luxury-goods tents ringing the field.
