Among the honored marques at this year's Concorso Italiano were "45 Years of Lamborghini and "The Cars of Marcello Gandini. How would anyone know? Gandini designs have been at every Concorso since the "Celebration of Italian Style was founded almost 20 years ago. Nonetheless, there they were: Diablos, Countachs and Miuras, parked next to the Ferraris, Alfas and Etceterinis, all stretching over the concrete horizon of the Marina Airport.
The trouble was, there was an awful lot of that concrete, and after a while it got awfully hard. The weatherbrisk, cold wind and fogemptied the Concorso memorabilia stand of all but the most expensive jackets by early afternoon. Wives and concubines of show-car owners could be seen huddled inside the cars with the windows rolled up, plotting their recompense.
Consider this a rebuilding year for the Concorso. When construction blocked use of the Black Horse Golf Course, site of the show for the last several years, the Wadsworth family, which owns the event, had to come up with a new location.
