VAUGHN: In these gas-sucking times, the mighty Accent is starting to look like the way of the future: an efficiently engineered four-banger (with continuously variable valve timing) mated to a five-speed manual pulling around less than 2,500 pounds. It even seats five. In the not-too-distant, Mad Max future, this could be the definition of luxury.
A lot of people are turning to the Accent. Sales are up 70 percent compared with this time last year. If the $15,000 sticker for our top-of-the-line SE is too high, the entry-level GS model is just $11,425. You could spend a grand or two more and get a Honda Fit, a Scion xB or a Toyota Yaris. Or spend the same amount and get a Chevrolet Aveo, which also is made in Korea. The point is that what once was the bottom rung might be considered pretty fancy.
