I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry was briefly number one on the midweek airplay flashes, but by week's end Coldplay's Viva La Vida had wrested back control to secure its sixth straight week in pole position.
If Viva La Vida can stay at number one for another week, it will equal the year's best run of seven weeks at number one, set by Duffy's Mercy. What it may never do is equal Mercy's overall airplay. Viva La Vida currently ranks 20th on the year-to-date airplay chart, with less than half the audience earned by Mercy, which is way ahead at the top, with a 45% cushion over second-placed Better In Time by Leona Lewis.
James Morrison made one of the best starts on the airwaves by a new artist this century, reaching the Top 10 of the radio airplay chart with all four singles from his debut album Undiscovered, despite the downward trajectory of their sales. The last of the four singles - the album's title track - flatlined on sales at number 63 but radio totally ignored its failure, and elevated it to number four on the airplay chart.
