Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. has begun a $31 million renovation of its Sun Belt Medical Center in east Houston.

Among other plans, the 273-bed hospital will expand its emergency department to accommodate a move that involves merging the Doctors Hospital East Loop emergency room into the facility.

The hospital will also upgrade its patient rooms, add a women's center and expand its intensive care, skilled nursing and geriatric psychiatry units.

"We have the opportunity to become the preeminent health care facility for east Harris County," says John Smithhisler, chief executive officer of Columbia Sun Belt Medical Center.
