The European Commission says it has opened an "in-depth" investigation into private equity firm Arsenal Capital Partners' previously announced acquisition of DSM Special Products (DSP) from DSM (CW, March 10, p. 13).
The commission says its investigation focuses on the market for benzoic acid and sodium benzoate. DSP makes those products as does Velsicol Chemical (Rosemont, IL), a company controlled by Arsenal. The commission is also concerned because Velsicol is a producer of benzoate plasticizers.
