Pakistan has always been a dictatorship masquerading as a democracy, and right now this equivocal country is very troubling. Pervez Musharraf, its president, seized power in 1999, and the legitimacy of his rule has been under a shadow from the start. Earlier this year, his party lost elections, but in spite of that he says he will not leave office. Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari, the winners of the election, have formed a coalition to govern, but they and their factions are rivals who have in common only their resentment of Musharraf.
