My first response to Romanticism: A Critical Reader, which is offered 'both as a companion and a supplement to' Duncan Wu's earlier Romanticism: An Anthology (1994), was one of slight disappointment. However, before I proceed to justify this initial reaction, I should in all fairness provide some account of the obvious strengths of this new collection of previously published critical essays.
