KALITTA HIRES AREND
Kalitta Motorsports chose veteran driver Jeff Arend, 45, to pilot Scott Kalitta's Toyota Solara Funny Car for the rest of the season. Kalitta died June 21 in a crash at Englishtown, N.J.
Arend has 12 years of Funny Car experience and most recently competed for Worsham Racing in 2007. He has 85 career NHRA starts and one win and will debut for his new team at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, scheduled for Aug. 27-Sept. 1.
F1 TEAMS ORGANIZE
Formula One team principals convened at Ferrari's base on July 29 to begin defining a new Grand Prix racing formula for 2011 and a possible new commercial structure. The meeting also was attended by Bernie Ecclestone and Donald MacKenzie, the CEO of CVC Capital Partners, majority shareholder in the F1 group of companies. The teams agreed that they needed a new organization that will work with the FIA. This will be known as the Formula One Teams Association, and Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo will head it.
KOVALAINEN EXTENDS DEAL
Hungarian Grand Prix winner Heikki Kovalainen will stay with McLaren-Mercedes next year. The team had not issued a statement as AutoWeek went to press, but McLaren F1 boss Martin Whitmarsh confirmed the deal to www. autosport.com.
