The latest photographs of the Mercedes-Benz gullwing sports car show a newly constructed prototype of the upcoming SLC, known under the internal code name C197. The pictures show production bodywork and signature gullwing doors for the first time as it undergoes testing at Mercedes' Unterturkheim test facility in Stuttgart, Germany.
The new car, set to replace the McLaren-built SLR at the top of the Mercedes lineup at a price of about $300,000, is loosely based on the mechanical package of the recently facelifted SL63 AMG. But in a departure from Mercedes' existing upmarket roadster, it is rumored to be a new platform using aluminum spaceframe construction as well as a carbon-fiber and aluminum body. These are examples of technical solutions that Mercedes is also planning to adopt on the fifth-generation SL due out in 2012, part of a weight-saving program to see each future model shed 5 percent of its predecessor's curb weight.
Launching in early 2010, following a public unveiling at next year's Frankfurt show, the front-engine SLC coupe clearly aims to resurrect the spirit of the German car-maker's 300SL. The doors open skyward to provide entry into a snug, two-seat cabin boasting its own unique dashboard and trim elements.
Along with the coupe version revealed here, Mercedes also is preparing a cabriolet version of the new SLC for launch in mid-2011. Code-named A197, it will ditch its coupe sibling's gullwing doors for more ...
