You are in the market for a used tractor (or other farm equipment) or want to sell one. How much should you pay or how much should you ask?
One excellent source of price information is the Hotline Farm Equipment Annual Guide (P.O. Box 1115, Fort Dodge, IA 50501, 800-247-2000 or 515-955-1600). It is referred to as the Blue Book for Farm Machinery. The cost is $39.20 postpaid.
This annual guide provides equipment specifications, serial number by year of manufacture (including where to find the serial number), the average dealer advertised price, estimated loan value and the low, high and average auction price for that particular equipment at a number of farm equipment auctions.
Some uses for this information:
* You see a tractor advertised in the local paper. The guide would proVide ready information on how similar models are priced so you now have a basis to negotiate.
* You are at a farm equipment auction and see a piece of equipment you like. If bidding is active you may think you will get a good deal by simply outbidding everyone else. However, you might be bidding against collectors wanting to restore it, or used equipment dealers wanting it for parts, as they can tear it down and sell individual parts for far more than its normal value. Knowing its value in advance would tell you when to drop out of the bidding if it is still going hot and heavy at that price.
