Sony/ATV has granted the creative licensing rights for all the master recordings it owns to aggregator The Orchard, as the company looks to expand its sync business.
While Sony/ATV is primarily known as a publisher, it also owns master recordings from labels including Tree Productions, Masters International and Hickory Records catalogues.
The deal, which is for the world outside North America, grants The Orchard marketing and digital distribution rights to all Sony/ATV Music Publishing-owned master recordings.
It also includes representation rights for creative licensing in film, television and advertising and brand entertainment opportunities, an area that Sony/ATV senior vice president Guy Henderson says is of crucial importance to the publishing business today.
"For a publisher, the sync business is the number one opportunity area," he explains. "We are strengthening our sync departments all over the world."
