At a time when artist album sales are falling, the unsexy compilations sector is coming up trumps
The compilations sector rarely gets the attention or credit it deserves, almost always overshadowed by the more dynamic, sexier artist albums business.
But at a time when artist album unit sales are down more than 9% on 2007's numbers, it is the various artists market that is defying gravity by winning more custom than a year ago.
Nowhere is this better illustrated than with Now!, whose 69th regular outing in March managed to achieve the highest first-week sales in the brand's near 25-year history, only for that total to be beaten a week ago by Now! 70.
Now! has been a phenomenon - and a British-invented one at that - for such a long time that it is very easy to take it for granted.
Perhaps that is because its huge sales are just assumed or maybe it just seems like easy success. After all, what could be simpler than putting together around 40 well-known tracks on an album and selling it at a competitive price?
Well, if it were that easy then there would be all sorts of other, similar packages in the market successfully managing to match or even beat Now!'s sales.
