Macromedia Inc. will next week launch a Web site editor and application development tool for creating dynamic links to databases.

The Backstage Studio tool has four elements: a WYSIWYG HTML editing tool, a Web site management tool, a Web server, and an object library. It is available in two versions: Enterprise Studio for client/server databases and Desktop Studio for desktop database links.

"What I liked about it [Backstage], in addition to the WYSIWYG stuff, is that it's designed to make database connectivity really easy," said Josh Bernoff, a senior analyst at Forrester Research Inc., in Cambridge, Mass.
