Hewlett-Packard Co. and Lexmark International Inc. are squaring off in the workgroup printing market, with HP adding three models to its LaserJet 5 line and Lexmark lowering prices and offering new configurations and models of its Optra Plus printers. Both companies are playing up network connectivity by offering built-in Ethernet cards with their network-ready models.
"Lexmark is being very aggressive and is raising the bar for the printer industry, including HP," said Angele Boyd, an analyst at International Data Corp., in Framingham, Mass. "Instead of offering the same features at a lower price, Lexmark is actually offering more features for a generally similar price." …
