General Motors is not too big to fail: It's just the right size. Even as rival Honda reports a sweet little 8 percent bump in quarterly profits, the big American automakers are foundering under the burden of expensive health-care and retirement commitments, the long tail of several generations' worth of extortionate contracts with the United Auto Workers. U.S. automakers are also suffering from poor management: GM and Ford have responded glacially to consumers' desire for more fuel-efficient vehicles, and those $100 fill-ups aren't doing anything at all for Hummer sales.
