Quarter two's Rajars saw promising results from two new forces in radio, Bauer Radio and Global. Even in a time of corporate upheaval, the commercial stations managed to minimise audience losses and close the gap on the ever-dominant BBC network
Magic's Neil Fox: The Bauer-owned station is London's most popular commercial station for the sixth consecutive Rajar
Meanwhile, Radio Two's Terry Wogan and other BBC DJs saw their combined audience fall back
The Bauer family, owners of the Magic, Big City and Kiss networks since last December, happened to be in London in force last Wednesday evening when the second-quarter Rajar results were unveiled to member stations.
"They were all in the building for meetings, purely by coincidence," says Bauer Radio managing director, national brands Mark Story, who was understandably relieved to find that the figures had put Magic on top in London for the sixth book in a row.
Story says the transition from Emap to Bauer has been "very smooth - very pleasant, actually," and he is pleased to be aboard a stable ship as Bauer's rivals face up to their own challenges. Fortunes in London tend to have a ripple effect through a given group, and in that light, Story is satisfied, but not complacent.
"We hate saying we are always going to be number one [in London], because we don't know, but we are certainly the most logical at the moment, given that Global and GCap will go through some degree of change," he says.
