As widely tipped throughout the music industry, The Rolling Stones have announced their signing to Universal Music Group, ending a 15-year relationship with EMI's Virgin label.
This latest deal was signposted after the band chose Polydor for the March release of the soundtrack album for Shine A Light, Martin Scorsese's film of their 2006 show at New York's Beacon Theatre. That album has sold an estimated 750,000 units worldwide, including 50,000 in the UK.
The capture of The Rolling Stones is as much a blow for EMI as it is a coup for Polydor, as the band still reputedly sell significant numbers of units annually from their extensive back catalogue.
EMI responded to the news by hinting that trying to retain the band did not make economic sense.
