Acclaimed dubstep album gets the nod from industry tastemakers after being nominated among a wealth of indie releases for the annual award
Dubstep act Burial, who records for tiny Hyperdub label, is emerging as a surprise early favourite for the Nationwide Mercury Music Prize among a shortlist dominated by indies.
Bookmaker William Hill was last Friday offering odds of 3/1 - shortened from 6/1 earlier in the week - on Burial's second album Untrue winning the prize, which will be announced on September 9. XL act Radiohead were second favourite at 9/2 with In Rainbows.
Burial, who operates anonymously, also got the nod from our informal panel of industry representatives ahead of Fiction's Elbow, who are being offered at 11/2 by the bookies for their The Seldom Seen Kid.
"I think Burial should win it as his music is unique and groundbreaking; all the things the Mercury Prize should represent," says Machine Management managing director Iain Watt.
"I think Burial will win without a shadow of a doubt," adds BBC Electric Proms event producer Samantha Moy. "He makes beautiful music which is adored in equal measure by the dubstep scene that spawned him and those, like Thom Yorke and Bloc Party, who look to the underground to make their music push the envelope."
Independent labels dominated the shortlist for the annual prize, which was announced last week: in total seven of the 12 albums shortlisted are released by indies.
