In this summer of high-end real-estate purgatory, salvation is coming from a new source: Russian oligarchs, flush with oil wealth and looking to invest in some prime stateside property.
In early July, an unidentified buyer purchased a town house on a gilded block of New York's Upper East Side for $42.5 million. Speculation is centering on Leonard Blavatnik, a Russian oil magnate who last fall paid $50 million to buy the neighboring house from Seagram's heir Edgar Bronfman Jr. Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who owns London's Chelsea football team, in May paid $36 million for an 81-hectare ranch in Aspen.
