New data reported by Dr. Deborah A. Levine indicate that waist circumference measurement can be a valuable indicator of cardiovascular risk in normal-weight patients ("Waist Size Tied to Hypertension Risk," May 1, 2008, p. 1).

However, we have found that waist size is best evaluated as a risk factor for hypertension by an individualized model of waist excess. What counts is not the absolute size of the waist girth but its size compared with a personal standard that depends on the width of the thorax at the bottom of the rib cage and the depth of the thorax at the sternum.
