It wouldn't be a proper AutoWeek retrospective without a catalog of the most important cars to pass through our pages, our garages and our hearts in 50 years. Unfettered, we easily could have filled this entire magazine. Instead, we gathered nominations from staffers and industry luminaries for consideration and whittled our way from there. Call it an exercise in restraint, picking the most important cars. We had a tough time getting the list to fewer than 100, and even then, it spills over off these pages onto our website.

The result reveals a surprising variety, both from the road and from the racetrack. There's no ranking involved, it's just a chronology, but ...
