SILVERSTONE OUT, OZ IN
The British Grand Prix will run for the last time at Silverstone in 2009, with Donington Park becoming the event's new host in 2010. Donington has a 10-year contract to hold the race after Donington Ventures Leisure committed to investing $198 million in facility improvements over the next five years.
Also, the Australian Grand Prix Corp. secured a new contract to stage the Australian GP through 2015 on the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne. AGPC was in danger of losing the race because Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone wanted it to run under lights, to fit better with TV coverage in Europe. A compromise will see the race start at 5 p.m. local time.
HENDRICK SIGNS MARTIN
As expected (Competition, July 7), Mark Martin will move next year from a part-time gig at Dale Earnhardt Inc. to a final full-season ride with Hendrick Motorsports. Martin will replace Casey Mears, who has only three poles and one win to show for 198 starts with Hendrick dating to 2003.
