Readers of our May 26/June 2 report on luxury were angry that we covered the superrich when natural calamities and a poor economy are causing worldwide suffering. "I'm tired of your articles on rich folks," wrote one. "I won't read it," said another. "How could you print such nonsense?" demanded a third.
Luxury or Sickening Ostentation?
In your May 26/June 2 cover story "Unsinkable Luxury," you say: "For the richest of the rich, the luxury spending spree goes on unfettered." So, the rich are still rich, and that is supposed to be news? Two hundred thousand people were killed in natural disasters in Burma and China, and about 7 million were made instantly homeless. In the meantime, astronomical price rises for basic foods are putting essentials almost out of reach for more than 1 billion of the world's desperately poor. Our planet continues to be raped and pillaged faster than ever, dramatic climate change and toxic pollution of every description are upon us, and the world has lost an estimated 30 percent of its species since 1970. But, hey, the rich are doing just fine, gratuitously grabbing vast resources to support their sickening ostentation. They should be ashamed. And so should you, NEWSWEEK, for this cover story.

There's a cyclone in Burma, an earthquake in China, and your cover story is about rich folks lounging on their yachts? I am very tired of all your articles on rich folks and their luxurious lifestyles.
