With four wins in seven races, Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas are on fire. After winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona-Pruett's second consecutive 24-hour win there-the Chip Ganassi/Felix Sabates team duo leads the Daytona Prototype points.
But Pruett led the standings at this time last year and still failed to bring home the championship. The 2004 co-champ lost out to Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty's late-season surge, which gave them the title by just two points after a nail-biting season finale.
Gurney and Fogarty, second in points, could repeat that comeback. The Gainsco/Bob Stallings drivers scored their first season win at Mid-Ohio (Competition, June 30) and will not be happy with second place.
"[Team owner] Bob Stallings has set a very simple goal of winning the next [seven] races in a row, Gurney said, laughing. That feat would break the record of seven total wins that he and Fogarty set last year. "But even then, we still think [Ganassi] needs a DNF.
Pruett held just an 11-point advantage at this stage in 2007. Now, he and Rojas lead Gainsco by 37 points, finishing out of the top three only once.
It's been "a dream start to the season, Pruett said. "We really stepped forward with the engine package this year, and I think [my teammate] has stepped up his game.
