RAYNAL: I'm always amazed that a car nearly three feet shorter than a Chevy Suburban can weigh almost as much. That said, I've always liked Land Rovers, and I still like the LR3. I like its quirky Britishness.
It really is a jack-of-all-trades kind of truck, with its go-anywhere ability and seven-seat capacity. It has a solidity that few vehicles can matchyou really can imagine yourself trundling along on a safari in Kenya, even if you're just using it as I did to haul kids and sports equipment and a few plants from the farmers' market. It feels unstoppable.
I like the upright looks, and I like the way it drives: It soaks up potholes and other road imperfections beautifully and cruises on the highway just fine. The V8's 300 hp is plenty once the tach gets past 3000 rpm. The six-speed automatic is smooth, and the brakes are awesome at stopping this nearly-6000-pound beast.
