This past September, childhood friends and roommates Susan Thorne, now 25, a teacher, and Kris Pietrowicz, now 26, a teaching student, woke up to find themselves trapped in a fire in the apartment they had been sharing for three months near Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

With intense flames and choking smoke blocking the front door and spreading fast across the rest of the apartment, the two women realized that they had to get out ... even if it meant jumping 30 feet to the ground below. Here, riley relay their terrifying story as it unfolded.
