You know how after you meet a cute guy, you practically sprint to your computer to Google him? Well guess what--he's Googling you too. And MySpacing you. And Facebooking you. And what he finds may determine whether or not you wait in vain for your cell to ring. "Men today conjure up an image of you based on online information--before they get to know you," says psychotherapist Toni Coleman.
And it's this opportunity to prejudge that puts your dating life in jeopardy. In the past, guys relied on information garnered from mutual friends or simply getting to know you on a date-by-date basis. But today, people put a lot of stock in what they dig up electronically. And while you can't stop a dude from uncovering your educational or job history, you do have some control over the social snapshot he gets of you. That opinion is formed faster if you meet on a site, because "you've given him the key to your vault just by connecting," says Sam Yagan, CEO of OK Cupid, a dating site also used for social networking.
