* You know when summer comes around, you crave fresh fruit like crazy. This season's lip colors are all about channeling that vibe and getting a rush from juicy, fruity shades that make your mouth look tantalizing. "Colors that remind us of foods at their peak of ripeness stimulate the senses on a number of levels," explains Leatrice Eiseman, author of More Alive With Color. "Just looking at them can turn you on." Take a peek at the three options we show here, which you can wear either day or night. "Layering will make any color more or less intense on you," explains makeup artist Denise Markey, who created the looks on these pages. "So it's really just about having fun." Sweet!
A Taste of Grape
Of all the fruity hues, grape is the most mysterious, according to Eiseman. "It has a darkness to it that can be incredibly exotic and intriguing," she points out. Don't paint on heavy purple though--go for a soft grape stain that lets your natural lip color come through a bit. "This way, the shade will accentuate your skin tone and won't seem too severe," says Markey.
Make sure your mouth is a good canvas by smoothing on a balm to loosen dry flakes and give you extra plumpness. Rub on a purple stain with your fingers (try MAC Tendertone Lip Balm in Sweet and Nice, $14.50), starting in the center and spreading it out to the edges. Finish by gently smushing your lips together. "This sets the color in a way that's not too perfect or precise," explains Markey. "The effect should be lived-in, like you've been kissed."
