I met Vernard at a party my freshman year of college. I felt an instant attraction, and he said that when he saw me walk across the room that night, he knew he had to talk to me. After dating on and off for three years, we moved in together and even talked about getting married.
But this past August, everything changed. Vernard went to a party one Saturday night, and when he didn't come home by 3 a.m., I called, but he didn't pick up. Then I got a call from the police: Vernard had been in an accident. I didn't even wait for the officer to arrive--I ran down the street to meet his car. He told me Vernard had taken a turn too fast, hit a pole, and was killed on impact along with another person in the car.
He also told me Vernard had been drunk.
I didn't believe him. I kept screaming, "It's not real" The officer asked if I could reach Vernard's parents, but when his mom answered, I couldn't get any words out. I had to hand the policeman my phone.
After the accident, I started to resent Vernard. I was angry at him for making such a stupid, selfish mistake ... but I also missed him ...
